For most levels, the hub requires a certain amount and certain kind of shape to progress to the next level. The first 26 levels are predetermined, and each unlock a new mechanic. The shapes needed for each level gradually get more difficult to make. After finishing level 26, the shapes are randomly generated for the goal.
Most levels require a certain number of the requested shape to reach the goal. However, level 14, and all freeplay levels, require a certain number of shapes to be delivered ''per second'' to reach the goal. While this removes the need to generate thousands of shapes, it can become incredibly difficult to keep up with the ever-increasing shapes demand in freeplay.
Unlike Upgrades, completing a level does not consume the required number of shapes. This means shapes delivered to complete a level can be reused for upgrades.
